(Photo by SAUL LOEB\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>OAN Staff&nbsp;<a href=index-1012.html target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br>6:23 PM \u2013 Friday, November 7, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune rejected a Democrat proposal to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, dismissing a one-year extension of Obamacare premium tax credits in exchange for reopening the government as a \u201cnon-starter\u201d that \u201cdoesn\u2019t even get close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, the assertive rebuke came just hours after Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), offered what Schumer described as a \u201creasonable compromise\u201d to break a 38-day impasse that has left more than 2 million federal workers unpaid, closed national parks, and triggered widespread flight delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today on the Senate floor:<br><br>Democrats made an offer to Republicans to re-open the government and extend the ACA tax credits for one year.<br><br>We\u2019re calling their bluff.<br><br>The ball is in their court. <a href=index-1013.html>pic.twitter.com\/jE7H6Wm1et<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) <a href=index50a7.html>November 8, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=index-1014.html charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While speaking to reporters outside the Senate chamber, Thune (R-S.D.) accused Democrats of trying to lock in unfunded entitlements without fiscal offsets. He maintained that not only was it not a serious offer, but rather, obvious political gamesmanship, further declaring that Americans want their government open &#8212; not held hostage over failed Obamacare policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think everybody who follows this knows that\u2019s a nonstarter. There is no way. The Obamacare extension is the negotiation. That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to negotiate once the government opens up,\u201d Thune&nbsp;told <em>CBS News<\/em>. \u201cBut you know, a one-year extension along the lines of what they\u2019re suggesting, I think everybody knows they\u2019re \u2013 and without Hyde protections \u2013 it doesn\u2019t even get close.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democrat proposal would have paired immediate passage of a clean continuing resolution, already approved by the House on October 1<sup>st<\/sup>, with a 12-month extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies set to expire December 31<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after, Schumer called the rejection \u201cunacceptable\u201d and warned that without action, certain groups could face premium increases of 20% to 30% next year. The standoff marked the 15<sup>th<\/sup> failed Senate vote on government funding in recent weeks, and Democrats have filibustered a Republican-backed clean CR 14 times, demanding that any funding bill include protections for the Obamacare credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If I were a Democrat, I would be embarrassed to walk into this building every day.<br><br>To walk past the men and women of the Capitol Police not getting paid. Johnson also asserted that Republicans&#8217; priorities come down to cutting spending and securing the border, not propping up Biden\u2019s preferred health care law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, President Trump weighed in on the matter on Truth Social, calling the recent Democrat offer \u201cextortion\u201d while praising Thune for standing firm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shutdown has cost the economy an estimated $6 billion per day, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. TSA checkpoints are understaffed, leading to thousands of flight cancellations, while national parks remain gated and federal services &#8212; from passport processing to veterans\u2019 benefits &#8212; grind to a halt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, behind closed doors, some more moderate Senate Republicans have expressed private support for a short-term Obamacare bridge to avoid year-end chaos.
